We have been working in Haiti since October 2000 and I still find myself at a loss for words everytime I go. Once, the most desired place to be for gold, coffee, sugar. Haiti was the first black nation to gain independence in 1804. The majority of its 8 million residents live on less than $1 per day. Unemployment is close to 80 percent. Average life expectancy is less than 50 years. Haiti is the poorest nation in the Western Hemisphere. And yet, they are amazing. They survive by God's grace to a people that for the most part the world seems to have forgotten. A recent poll said that Haiti is the most corrupt nation in the world.
